What You Need to Know About Shockwave Therapy

Are you tired of dealing with pain that keeps coming back or do you feel like nothing seems to work?

At Omni Wellness & Performance in Fairfax, VA, we’re super excited to introduce you to a game-changing solution: Shockwave therapy (aka EPAT therapy).

Truth: I selfishly wanted to try out the new tech for pain relief for myself, since as an active soccer coach, have been dealing with some deep rooted hip pain/stiffness that had been expanding into my right knee.

So here’s what I did, I took a leap of faith and invested (heavily) on this new Shockwave Therapy device, often called EPAT for short: Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Therapy, who wants to say that fast three times?

Not only can it help you feel better fast, but it also won’t break your budget. Read on to learn more about this amazing treatment, why it works, and how it can transform your life.

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a special treatment that uses sound waves to help your body heal and reduce pain. Think about how waves crash against a beach—these waves work in a similar way inside your body, gently “nudging” your tissues to start healing. It’s safe, non-invasive, and, for most people, painless.

A Simple Explanation

  • A small handheld device sends quick sound pulses into the sore or damaged area of your body.
  • These sound waves stimulate your body’s natural healing processes, boosting blood flow, enhances localized stem cell production and aids in tissue repair.
  • And No needles, no cuts, no medication and NO down time needed.

This means you can get back to working out, running, playing tennis or golf faster, unlike some injections where you need to let the tissue “rest”, shockwave therapy allows you to get back to doing what you love much quicker.  Did I mention that it was also PAINLESS?

If you’ve ever wished for a faster way to overcome stubborn aches and pains, Shockwave therapy might be the perfect option for you.

How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

Shockwave therapy is like an alarm clock or an auto pilot mode for your body’s repair system. Initially right after an injury your body knows what to do to help begin the healing cycle, sending inflammatory response cells to do their job. Unfortunately, this process ends after about 24-48 hours after an injury occurs, here’s where the magic of shockwave therapy comes into play.

When the sound waves enter your tissues, they:

  • Wake Up Your Body’s Natural Healing Powers: They tell your brain, “Hey, this area needs extra help!” By reintroducing micro trauma to the area.
  • Improve Blood Flow: More blood flow means more oxygen and nutrients to help you heal.
  • Break Up Painful Calcium Deposits: Sometimes, tiny calcium spots can form and cause pain. Shockwave therapy helps break them down.
  • Spark the Growth of New Blood Vessels: New blood vessels mean your muscles, tendons, and bones get fresh resources to repair.
  • Lower Inflammation: If the area is hot, swollen, or tender, Shockwave therapy can calm it down.

The best part? Many people start to feel relief after just a few sessions.

Our average patient is seeing remarkable results in just 6-8 treatments.

The Treatment Experience: What to Expect

We often get asked, “Can I just come in for 1 Shockwave treatment, and see how I feel?” While this sounds like it makes sense for a quick fix, that’s not actually how the body works.

All new patients seeking to get shockwave therapy, will also need to get an evaluation from our Doctor of Physical Therapy.

Just like going to the dentist, they need to take x-rays and examination before they start drilling away on your teeth.

Visiting us for Shockwave therapy is simple and stress-free. Here’s a quick look at what happens during a session:

  • A Physical Therapy Evaluation: Full medical history, clinical testing of nerves, muscles, joint and ligaments as well as report of findings.
  • Plan of Care: Based on the clinical and functional outcomes we will recommend a game plan to get you back on track, we have two options 8 pack or a 12 pack of physical therapy.
  • The Treatment: We use a handheld device that sends sound waves into the problem area. We’ll move the device around to make sure we treat all the painful spots.
  • Quick Sessions: Most treatments last 15-20 minutes, depending on the size of the area.

After Treatment: We re-asses your range of motion, have you perform movements that typically cause pain. When you’re done, you can return to your normal routine right away. No special rest is required, and you can even drive yourself home or back to work.

The million dollar question: Does It Hurt?

When I tell you I even have treated my mom who is in her 70’s and my son who is 11, trust me no it’s not painful at all. While we do look and ask you for a level of discomfort of 5-6 out of 10, we do not want the discomfort to be higher than an 8 of 10.

Most people feel only mild discomfort, if any at all. The majority of our patients report that it actually feels good. Some describe it as a gentle tapping on their skin. We can always adjust the intensity if you have any sensitivity, making sure you stay comfortable.

The BEST Deal in Fairfax —Save on Shockwave Therapy

At Omni Wellness & Performance, we charge only $100 per session for TWO body parts. This is a huge saving compared to many other providers. There are no hidden fees, and we don’t force you to buy a big package if you only need a few sessions.

  • Pay as You Go: No bundles or contracts required.
  • Transparent Pricing: Know your costs from the start.
  • High-Value Service: Quality care at a price that fits your budget.

We want to help you get the relief you need without draining your wallet.

Compare Our Prices to Other Clinics

It can be tough finding the best care at a fair price. To show you how we stack up, here are real examples of what some local clinics charge within a short drive of Fairfax:

  • Other Foot & Ankle Clinics

    • $975 for a package of four sessions
    • Must buy an entire package
    • Primarily focuses on foot-related issues
  • National Average Cost

    • $100 -$300 for one region

When you weigh these costs against Omni Wellness & Performance’s $100 for TWO body parts, it’s easy to see why our patients are so happy. You save money while still receiving top-notch care. Did I mention that all our physical therapy sessions are always full 60 minutes 1 on 1 with the Doctor of Physical Therapy, unlike most “In-network clinics” where the see multiple patients per hour often leading to misdiagnosed conditions or progress.

The Real Science Behind Shockwave Therapy

If you made it this far, you might be asking, “Is there actual proof that Shockwave therapy works?” The answer is YES. Many scientific studies show that this treatment is both safe and effective.

  • Study 1: Shows how Shockwave therapy can quickly reduce pain in people with chronic problems.
  • Study 2: Highlights how it helps repair damaged tissues without the need for surgery.
  • Study 3: Explores how Shockwave therapy supports better blood flow and faster healing.
  • Study 4: Discusses success rates in chronic pain conditions like plantar fasciitis and tennis elbow.

These published studies come from NIH, not the sales page from a manufacture. It confirms what we see every day at Omni Wellness & Performance: patients feel better and heal faster with Shockwave therapy.

Common Questions About Shockwave Therapy

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

While we can’t give you an exact number since everyone is different and each case varies, traditionally our patients are getting lasting results between 6-8 visits.

Of course the exact number depends on your personal health, how long you’ve had pain, and how your body responds to the therapy.

Will My Insurance Cover It?

Unfortunately there is no CPT-10 Code for Shockwave Therapy , so many insurance plans do not cover Shockwave therapy yet, considering it a specialized treatment. That’s why our lower prices are such a big deal. Plus, we offer flexible payment options to help you manage costs.

If you want to get a 12 pack of physical therapy we do offer a split pay option, so you pay for the first 6 sessions then on visit 7 we bill you for the remainder of the sessions. Since the number of shockwave treatments vary, we do not automatically bill you for them, so they will be added on to your therapy bill.

Is Shockwave Therapy Safe?

Yes, it’s very safe and FDA-approved. Side effects are typically minor—some people might feel slight soreness afterward, but this usually goes away quickly. Since it’s non-invasive, there’s no downtime or recovery period to worry about.

As we stated earlier since there is no downtime, you can bet you will be back to resuming your activities in no time at all, if you are doing your part and helping us execute your plan of care!

Tips for Getting the Most from Your Treatment

  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking water before and after your session helps your body heal faster.
  • Keep Moving: Light exercise can improve blood flow and make Shockwave therapy even more effective.
  • Be Patient: While some people feel better right away, others may need a few treatments before noticing big changes.

Follow Your Plan: It’s important to come to all your scheduled sessions and follow any advice our team gives you.
