Know exactly how every joint moves — and exactly what to do about it.
You’ve been told to “just stretch more,” “rest it,” or “give it time.” Maybe you’ve done all three and the tightness, the catch in your hip, or the shoulder that won’t cooperate is still there. The problem isn’t your effort — it’s that nobody actually measured what’s going on.
There’s a saying in the movement world: don’t guess, get assessed. A Functional Range Assessment (FRA®) at Omni Wellness & Performance in Fairfax, VA does exactly that. Instead of a quick eyeball and a generic plan, we take precise, objective measurements of how every major joint in your body moves — and then we build your program around what those numbers actually tell us.
If you’re an active adult or athlete in Northern Virginia who’s tired of cookie-cutter advice, this is where real answers start.
A Functional Range Assessment (FRA®) is a measurement-based system for evaluating how well your joints move. Rather than giving a general impression of your flexibility, an FRA produces objective numbers for the active and passive range of motion at each individual joint, plus the rotational control you have within that range.
Put simply: it’s a complete, joint-by-joint baseline of your movement capacity. We compare where your joints are now against what your life and goals actually demand of them — then we close the gap with a targeted plan.
Think of it like taking your car in for a full inspection. Most people remember to service the vehicle in their driveway but never get the same workup for the body they live in. The FRA is that workup — for your hips, shoulders, spine, knees, ankles, and everything in between.
Most “movement screens” tell you that you move poorly. They rarely tell you why, where, or what to do next with any precision. The FRA is built to answer all three.
Every joint is measured and recorded, so your results aren’t an opinion that changes depending on who’s watching. You get real numbers — which means real progress you can see and re-test later.
A typical exam might note that “your hips are tight.” An FRA distinguishes which motion at which joint is limited — so treatment is aimed at the exact restriction holding you back.
A joint can be limited because the tissue won’t allow more motion, or because your nervous system won’t let you control that range. The FRA tells us which — so you’re not stretching something that needs strengthening.
Your assessment leads directly into action. The findings dictate your manual therapy, your mobility training, and your at-home work — and they give us an honest baseline to measure against as you improve.
Across your assessment, we evaluate each major articulation in your body for three things:
How far a joint can be moved when we move it for you. This tells us about the tissue itself — the capsule, ligaments, and surrounding structures.
How far you can move and control a joint on your own. The gap between your passive and active ranges is where injury risk and lost performance often hide.
Using Controlled Articular Rotations — slow, controlled circles taken to your end range — we assess how much rotational control you actually own at each joint.
We hold your results against the real-world demands of your sport, job, and lifestyle. Your plan reflects your demands — not a generic standard.
A Functional Range Assessment changed how I think about care. Most people have never had their joints measured one by one — they’ve only ever been told whether something “looks tight.” When you actually quantify what each joint can and can’t do, the guesswork disappears. We stop chasing symptoms and start treating the real limitation.
At OMNI, the FRA is the foundation. It tells me where you’re restricted, whether the issue is the tissue or the way your nervous system is controlling that joint, and exactly where your training and treatment should go first. If you’ve felt stuck for a while, this is the appointment that finally gives you a map.
Your Functional Range Assessment is hands-on, thorough, and unhurried. Here’s how it works at our Fairfax studio:
An FRA is one of the most useful things you can do for your body, whether something hurts or not. It’s a strong fit for:
The assessment isn’t the end — it’s the starting point that makes the rest of your care precise.
That integration is the whole point. Your assessment, your treatment, and your training all speak the same language and aim at the same targets.
A Functional Range Assessment (FRA) is a measurement-based evaluation of how every major joint in your body moves. It objectively measures your passive range of motion, active range of motion, and rotational control at each joint, then uses those findings to build a targeted treatment and training plan. It’s offered at Omni Wellness & Performance in Fairfax, VA.
A standard screen usually gives a general impression of how you move. An FRA produces objective, joint-by-joint numbers and distinguishes whether each restriction is a tissue limitation or a nervous-system control limitation — because each requires a different solution. The result is a precise plan rather than generic advice.
An FRA is a comprehensive, hands-on exam, so it takes meaningfully longer than a quick check — plan for a full appointment rather than a brief visit. Because every major joint is measured individually, the time invested is what makes the results genuinely useful. Contact OMNI for current appointment length and pricing.
No. The assessment involves controlled movement of your joints, both with our help and on your own. You may feel the limits of your range, but it shouldn’t be painful. If you have an active injury, let us know in advance so we can adapt the assessment to you.
Not at all. Many clients get an FRA precisely because nothing hurts yet — it’s one of the best ways to find hidden limitations and reduce injury risk before a problem develops. It’s equally valuable whether you’re in pain, returning from rehab, or simply want a true performance baseline.
An FRA can help by pinpointing the restricted joints and movement faults often connected to pain, so treatment is aimed at the actual cause rather than the symptom. If you have significant pain or an active injury, the assessment also tells us whether you should start with hands-on physical therapy first.
You’ll review your results with your provider and leave with a clear plan. Depending on your findings, that may include hands-on physical therapy, targeted mobility work, or a Kinstretch® class. We re-measure over time so your progress is objective and visible.
