Rowan is two years old and lives with hypotonia after being diagnosed at two weeks old. Hypotonia is a fancy word for low muscle tone. Lifting your arm to your face is easy for you, for him it’s like doing it holding a 50 lb weight. Hypotonia also causes complications with feeding and breathing.
We celebrate inchstones, not milestones. It is a slow road, but we continue to work at it every day. Hypotonia has no cure so Rowan will need extensive medical treatment for the rest of his life.
Early intervention is critical for his success, and he continues to make progress with his team of therapists and doctors.

It’s not that he’s weak, his muscles just don’t contract hard enough or long enough to perform a movement to do what he wants to do. Lifting your arm to your face is easy for you, for him it’s like doing it holding a 50 lb weight. Hypotonia also causes complications with feeding and breathing.
Low muscle tone can cause delayed motor skills, muscle weakness, and/or coordination problems. It is extremely important for Rowan to have speech, occupational, and physical therapy, as well as keep monthly appointments with many specialists at Johns Hopkins and Kennedy Krieger.
Rowan also wears AFO braces on his legs to allow him to compensate for his low muscle tone. Hypotonia has no cure so Rowan will need extensive medical treatment for the rest of his life. Early intervention is critical for his success, and he continues to make progress with his team of therapists and doctors.
Therapy, doctors, genetic testing, leg braces, and lab tests for hypotonia can be extremely costly even with insurance. Over the past two years, the medical costs for Rowan’s treatment have totaled more than $25,000 and continue to grow.
